The professional Thought Pieces

1. Closing Learning Gaps at My School

Learning gap is one of the emerging issues in my school, particularly the gap between literacy and numeracy. This disparity is caused by factors of irregular attendance to school, lack of learning aids in the home, and different degrees of parental participation as well. I have experienced as a teacher that the traditional teaching methods cannot be used in isolation to fill these gaps. Rather than that, differentiated instructions and more specific interventions are required.

In my opinion, technology will be very instrumental in combating this challenge. As an example, an adaptive learning software has the capability of individualizing instruction based on student needs, where struggling students are given additional attention and reinforcement, and advanced students are challenged at a greater depth. Nevertheless, implementation is only achieved when there is proper training of teachers and equal access to devices for the students.

In the future, I will initiate the development of small-group tutoring programs with colleagues, implement blended learning models, and promote policies at the school level that will place emphasis on equity regarding the distribution of resources. Closing the learning gap cannot be presented as a one-day initiative, but as a long-term, persevering process that needs dedication, ingenuity, and community participation.
